Katsis Orthodontics:  Braces Care

Congratulations!

You have braces and are on your way to an even more impressive smile!  Now what?

Do Braces Hurt?
The first few days your teeth will be a little uncomfortable.  Don’t worry about a little soreness.  We recommend soft foods, over-the-counter pain relievers (Ibuprofen, Tylenol, etc.), warm salt water rinses, and using wax to cover sore spots.  Please call the office if your pain is severe or if your braces or wires become loose.  Each day will get a little better and a little easier.  You got this!

What do I do  with a wire that is poking or  a loose bracket?
If the wire and/or one of the braces is poking we have some easy solutions for you.  Remember that little container of wax we gave you and how we said it’s your new BFF?  Put a dab of that on the wire or brace and bask in the waxy goodness.  It’s like a pillow for your cheeks.  Swish a little warm salt-water and you will feel much better.  Like breaking in a new pair of shoes sometimes it takes a few days to get used to your new tooth jewelry but you will get the hang of it.  If the soreness is interfering with sleep or eating give us a call, don’t be shy, we will fix you right up.

How do I brush my teeth with braces?
First off a toothbrush helps.  Floss is also important.  We will show you how to brush and floss your braces when you get them on and refer here if you have any questions.  Simply put, you want to brush all surfaces of your teeth, the gum-line, and your braces.  It only takes an extra 45 seconds each time you brush to get your teeth so fresh and so clean-clean with braces.  You got this.

What can't I eat with braces?
As a general rule, foods that are really hard or really sticky are going to break your braces or bend the wires causing problems and discomfort so avoid those!  Braces are glued on with a special adhesive that isn’t meant to stick to your teeth forever which is a good thing!  Most people eventually want their braces off and the glue is designed to accommodate this.  If you are thinking to yourself, “this deep dish pizza crust is probably going to break off my braces…” chances are it will which is going to mean extra time and appointments in braces.  Ain’t no one got time for that.  We will give you a detailed list of foods to avoid with braces before you get them on in case you forget.
